When a woman becomes pregnant, her first contact is with a midwife, who records details of the woman's personal, medical and family history and assesses her present health status. The midwife will find out if the pregnancy is progressing smoothly. Depending on whether the woman chooses a hospital birth or home birth, care is continued by either a hospital based midwife, a community midwife or a combination of both. Women may also choose to attend a doctor for care.
Midwives offer counselling, support and education to pregnant women and their partners, often via parent craft classes. These classes help future parents prepare for the arrival of their baby and develop confidence in them as parents.
Midwives examine mother and unborn baby regularly throughout the pregnancy, both at home and in hospital, in order to establish whether there are any problems with either of them. Most pregnancies are absolutely normal, but anything unusual is referred to a doctor.
Following the birth, midwives continue to help the parents to look after the baby, giving advice on feeding and baby care and ensuring that the mother is well. In the event of a miscarriage, still birth or the baby being born with a disability, the midwife will offer support and give advice to distressed parents.
